Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five in which he loved betting on various card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming really aggressive in these card games while playing his dad. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a bit and moved to New York to play some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st two years were tough as he would play extensive hours and fail to win most times. He earned some additional money by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he might better his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He made an attempt to get more sleep and focus attention even more on the game.

The actual advancement in his game happened when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable players would frequently challenge each other. He was able to access some of the best players in chess. With their assistance, he would sharpen his strategic thinking abilities. Howard used these strategy ideas in the game of NL hold’em.

Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn poker. She was a great student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie to head out to Las Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. She is one of the greatest female players the poker arena has ever seen. He headed to Las Vegas in 1993 and competed in cash games for the subsequent decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he decided to compete in more tournaments.
