Gus Hansen had a wonderful year on the WPT where he was the only gambler to make it to the final game in 3 of the events. Gus Hansen has appeared on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he paid $400, 000 to play. You may remember one of the largest pots in high stakes poker history up against Daniel Negreanu. Hansen won a massive pot with quads against Negreanu’s full house. Hansen has made many televised poker appearances and is deemed to be one of the strongest enthusiasts around the world. While wagering on online poker, another side of Hansen has been seen. He often plays in the 200/400 NL maximum buy-in of $40, 000. Gus usually buys-in for the minimum of $16, 000 and plays very weak. He sits there waiting for a decent hand and then goes all in. I believe Gus is an excellent poker player but certainly not even close to the regular players at 200/400NL. Unless Gus is bankrupt, he has little or no reason to settle at the table with the min buy-in.
Buying in for the min takes almost all of the expertise out of big stack poker. Hansen is assumed to be one of the best players in the world but he can’t buy-in for the full amt.. I believe television can skew our perception of the real world every now and then. The best poker players in the world may be players you have won’t have heard about. Gus can be seen competing in internet poker on Full Tilt. He usually competes in big stakes omaha/8 and texas hold’em. Gus has proven himself as a tournament player. Can he use his abilities in cash games?
