Pai Gow is played with 53 cards; the customary 52-card basic deck and one joker. The player is given seven cards faces showing and the croupier gets 7 cards face down.
A 5 card hand and one 2 card hand must be put together from the 7 cards dealt, the 5 card hand has to be stronger than the two card hand. To succeed, a player needs both of his hand totals to be better than the houses.
