Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five in which he enjoyed participating in various card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting really competitive in these card games as he was playing his father. After finishing high school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little bit and moved away to New York to play some formidable chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were tough as he played extensive hours and do not win a majority of the time. He earned some additional cash by becoming an runner for the poker players. He believed he might improve his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to acquire more sleep and focus even more on poker.
The real improvement in his skills happened when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would regularly challenge each other. Howard had access into a few of the best players in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would sharpen his strategic thinking techniques. He used these strategy ideas in the game of No-Limit texas hold’em.
Howard also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. She was an excellent student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct choice. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Sin City and compete in the WSOP competition. She is one of the greatest female players the poker world ever. He relocated to Las Vegas in 1993 and participated in money games for the following decade. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard decided to play more tournaments.
